My boyfriend is currently serving on U.S.S. Houston. I read a lot of stuff about being on submarines. How it divorces you from the real world. It's hard because you never know what's going on with them so far under water. I noticed a couple of guys in the book have served on Houston as well. I would love to hear a bit more about it if that's possible at all? Yours sincerely LEONIE

I am saddened to read Mrs. Gillaspie's message below about the passing of her husband, Conrad, earlier this year. MMCM(SS)Conrad Gillaspie served on the USS Drum in 1994-1995. I know I can speak for all our shipmates in extending our deepest sympathy to M s. Gillaspie and family. To honor her suggestion, I would like to add a section to our Crew List in memory of Drum Shipmates on Eternal Patrol. Please E-mail me if you know of departed Shipmates who should be included in our rememberance.

Best boat website I have seen yet. The photos and historical documentation are priceless. I've been glued to my PC for hours. It's enough to give even Boomer sailors flashbacks. It's funny how much I hated it all when I was in, and now I'm so very fond of it, especially the hardware. I swear I could stare at a boat for hours and not get enough of it. Thanks for the experience!

Always sad to see a ship(boat) no longer alive, hope you guys are successful in bringing her back. The Submarine Service lost one of its great heroes. Last Saturday, Feb 26th, Capt George L. Street III passed away. Capt Street was a WWII sub skipper who was a Congressional Medal of Honor recipient. This afternoon (Sunday Mar 5th) I attended the memorial service for Capt Street at Christ Church in Andover, MA. This service was attended by hundreds and many Submariners past and present were in attendance. It was a very moving service. Capt Street was true American hero and a real gentleman. He will be missed. Sailor, rest you oars.. I am on the Executive Board of the Mass. Committee for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve. We are the folks who make sure that all returning vets find the job they had when they left is still theirs. One of our committee-members and one of the gr atest submarine heroes has taken ill. Massachusetts' own Captain George Street (Medal of Honor recipient) has had a stroke (1/18/00). He is at Lawrence General Hospital Room 520. USN Capt. Street served with distinction aboard the USS Tirante and was a arded several commendations for his wellknown acts of bravery. I hope you all join me in wishing him a speedy recovery.
